The First Iowa City Anthem Recap

Our first Anthem in Iowa City was...
The pictures will do better than words. It was a "tavern" transformed into a temple, and for those who were there, I think it will be one of those "I was there" moments.

It's hard to say how many people were there. I would guess between 300-500. Below you can see there is an upper level that was a few rows deep with people.
At the end, I pulled up Carson Gardner, who is a sophomore in high school from the Ames area, to lead "You deserve" and Justan Spaid to sing "We are not the same", which is a song he helped write. The atmosphere was electric.

This Anthem was a nice change of pace for the band because there was a lot less emphasis on the production side. Because there was a business above the bar, we did a "quiet" run through of the set sitting in a circle. As it turns out, we may do that more often because we weren't as worn out for the actual event.

The bar became "Beth El"... house of God.
Here's the set list. Notice all the question marks at the bottom. We weren't sure how long the set was going to be, but we knew we had to be done by 9:45. Iowa City used to allow anyone 19 and older into the bars, until this summer...
I wanted to thank all of you who came down from Ames. There were probably 100 of you that made the trek down to join us for worship. Thanks for your continued prayers and support. This is just the beginning.

Soli Deo Gloria!

Irresistible Revolution

I'm always weary of fanfare, but after so many of my well respected community encouraged me to read Shane Claiborne's "Irresistible Revolution", I've finally cracked open the book.  The Prelude was enough to get me hooked, which is basically an introduction to the author.  I'm only one chapter in, but here is a link to read the 5th Chapter for free!  Have you read this book?  What do you think?  Hope you're all well, Ryan Seiler

Anthem is tomorrow!

It was about 4 years and 2 weeks ago that we had our very first Anthem, under a tent in the parking lot at Cornerstone Church. It has morphed into something pretty amazing, and God has used it as an event to stir up the hearts of young people to be undivided in their devotion to Christ.

Tomorrow over 1,000 students will gather for a night of worship and prayer. If you are within driving distance of Ames, Iowa... you should be there!

Here's a sneak preview from Monday's rehearsal...

Is Ryan Seiler going to be there?
Of course.

What about Jesse Antelman?
Yep.

But you'll also see some new faces... Brenton on drums (jumping in for Clint on part of the set)
Wally on bass... (here giving his best bass player pose). Bass players are always a little... unique. No offense Bryan, but you kind of fit the stereotype... Zombie movies and listening to music where 32nd notes at 132 are cool. We'll miss you at this Anthem, Bryan.
If you don't like it loud, bring ear plugs. Phil will have the auditorium rockin'. Our water bottles were vibrating off the stage. I wonder if Isaiah got ear damage from his glimpse of glory with the voices of the seraphs, whose voices were so loud, the doorposts and thresholds shook (Is. 6:4). And the place was filled with smoke. We'll have a little of that, too.
But more than the band, music, hazers, yada yada- hundreds of people have been fasting, praying, and anticipating the presence of God among us in a powerful way. We gather to pray, seek and worship our great God.

See you tomorrow. 8:00 at Cornerstone (Click here for directions)

Anthem a couple days away....

Anthem is only a couple days away...Wow I'm pumped! I'm ready for a night of worship and seeing God show up in amazing ways!  We will be doing a lot of the songs of our new album "With One Voice". If you have not heard this album yet check it out! We can't wait to be able to play these songs live! If you have heard the album we would love to receive your feedback so leave a review on I tunes.

Thanks and see you on Thursday Oct.7...8pm at Cornerstone Church.

Tech Rehearsal

We've been putting a lot of thought and time into preparing for Anthem this this Thursday. Last night was Tech Rehearsal. One of the coolest parts is to see things that were once only ideas come to life and become a reality.

Anthem in 7 Days

Here's some news to be anticipating at Anthem...

Today we decided on a date and location for our first ever Anthem in Iowa City. It's one of the most unlikely (and dark) places you could ever imagine! Where do you take a light? To a very dark place. We found one. Stay tuned.

I'll see you on October 7th, 8:00 p.m. at Cornerstone Church in Ames, Iowa for the big announcement.

Anthem Countdown... 8 days away!

Wow, we are only 8 days away from our next Anthem in Ames.

Here's why I'm so stoked for this Anthem event:

1. 1500 students packed into an auditorium for a night of passionate worship, prayer and connection with God...

I'm there!

2. Some of these songs on the album have never been played by the Anthem band.

Never? How is this possible, since they're on the album?

Well, good question. "We are not the same" and "Sun to go down" were partially written in the studio. So Clint went up to Minneapolis to record the drum tracks all by himself. He sat with headphones on, and playing along with "We are not the same" and "Sun to go down" IN HIS HEAD. Dang. That's skill I don't have. He wrote the songs, recorded drum tracks, and then had everyone go up in shifts and add their layer/instrument/vocal to the song. Jesse and Ryan wrote some of the verses on their drive up to Minneapolis, modifying the verse lyrics/melodies that Justan had previously written.

That's a very long way to say: "We are not the same" is going to rock on October 7th. I love shouting with you all, at the top of our lungs about how Jesus Christ has changed our lives. Because of him, we are not the same! Here's a blurry picture from my iphone of us playing it for the very first time at our song writing practice last Saturday in the Box at Cornerstone...

3. God responds to the worship and prayers of his people

"For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him." 2 Chronicles 16:9
"...God acts on the behalf of those who wait for him." Isaiah 64:4

What is God going to do? How is He going to ACT on our behalf as a result of our gathering?

Come and find out. See you on the 7th.

Free Lyrics and Chord Charts

Here's what I love about writing our own music... We can give away free stuff!!!!

We want these songs to be as accessible as possible; therefore, we've made all the chord charts and lyrics available for FREE on the website: www.anthemworship.com

Print them off for your worship team or use them for personal worship or whatever. But what's ours is yours. There's no publishing company that can come between you and us.

Another thing you'll find on the site is the ability to stream four of the new songs to see if you want to purchase the album. Or just listen to those four songs over and over at work, home, class...

Why "With One Voice"?  We decided on the name of With One Voice because it sums up our desire for anthem and for the world and that is One unified cry to God shouting his praises and bringing Glory to His Name!  So join us, grab the cd, come to the event, but most importantly seek truth and we pray what you find is the love of God waiting for you , and above anything else that is what unifies us!

What I love about this album

I've been listening to this album, "With One Voice" for the last year.

Kind of.

The most satisfying part about listening to the album is remembering the story behind each song, and watching each song progress from inception to completion.

Each song starts with the simplicity of a songwriter with his/her favorite tools: piano or a guitar and Bible...

Here are some things I remember over the last year about each song (in the order the songs appear on the album...)

1. You gave me life

This was one of the first songs written. It was one of those songs that as soon as Jesse played it for me, I knew it was going to be on the album. I remember the first time we ever did it for worship- an acoustic set in Des Moines at the summer Salt (not to be confused with "somersault"). The song didn't bomb, but the event did. There were like 3 of us in the crowd singing. Actually, I was the only one in the crowd singing, because the other 2 people didn't know the song.

2. Good life

I remember hearing this after Clint and Ryan had a jam session. Clint sent the song writing team a simplified version. It sounded like Owl City at the beginning, but somewhere along the line picked up a dance groove. This is one of my favorite songs on the album. I love Ryan's unconventional lyrics. They are brilliant. How many worship songs do we have about living a wise life? Brilliant.

3. We are not the same

Clint wrote this awhile ago, but it sat on the shelf with no verses. Finally Spaid saved the day with some verse melody and lyric ideas. Ryan and Jesse finished it up in the studio. It pushes our style a little, but I love this song. It should be sung with the windows down on the highway. Going the speed limit of course.

4. Carried away

We had hit a wall at one of our rehearsals and I told the band, "Let's break into 3 groups and write something." This is what emerged from Laugerman and Haleigh's group. It was shelved for awhile until Clint wrote the verses, and Bobby wrote the chorus melody and I pitched in some lyrics/melody. Ryan threw in the bridge. This song, more than any other, was pretty much written by the whole band. I still think the original piano intro that Laugerman wrote is better than the electric intro you'll hear on the album. I think it was Bobby who wouldn't let the 80's guitar lead go. You out there, Bobby?

5. To hear you

Ryan played this at one of our rehearsals and the band just started playing with him right away, never having heard the song before. That's pretty much the end of the story.

6. One life

This is a carry over from the first album. We just felt this song needed more run. We tried about 4 times to record the gang vocals for the intro, but it just never sounded good. I actually like the intro better without it. It emphasizes the catchy guitar and synth leads better.

7. His glory never fades

This is one that Laugerman brought to the team in its entirety. Not much changed with the melody, but we almost didn't include this song on the album, because we couldn't figure out what it should be musically. It came together and is probably one of the best corporate worship songs on the album.

8. Reveal

This song was on the shelf for a long time... over a year. Clint and Jesse worked together and figured it out. Clint's favorite part was the "Holy" chant. I don't think Jesse was a fan... but I think Clint is right. That's so fun to declare in a live worship event; it reminds me of Psalm 29:9, "in God's temple, all cry 'HOLY!'"

9. Take the day

Another Ryan Seiler song that just wasn't done (from the last album). Who doesn't like declaring, "When we have full sight of you, we can't take our eyes off you. I want to live my life that way, God take the day!"

10. Praise of your glory

Wally wrote this song as our church was studying through Ephesians. It's pretty much taken right out of Ephesians 1. I love songs that declare the tomb is empty- Christ has conquered death- He is risen! We need more songs that proclaim the resurrection. The only thing that spoils this song for me is memories of sitting in the studio listening to Bobby play the lead guitar line over 30 times at about 2:00 a.m. Is that the second time I've dogged Bobby on this post?

11. With one voice

I'm so glad this song made it on the album. Bobby brought a riff and chord progression, but it was almost lost. Jesse just would not give up on it, though. He kept fighting and out came the most epic song on the album. This had to be the best worship songs played at the last Anthem. I will never forget 1400+ people packed in the Cornerstone auditorium with hands lifted together.

12. Sun to go down

Clint wrote this a couple years ago (maybe longer). I fought for this to be on the album. It's got quite a different sound than how Clint originally wrote it. I'm not sure how it will work out as a corporate worship song, but it's a nice way to end the album. "I can't wait for the sun to go down so I can see the stars, and understand how real you are- even from so far..."

The album's release this week is the consummation of countless hours of writing, practice, rehearsals, prayer, recording, team conflict (and resolution), and conversations. There's a joy that comes from presenting this as a finished offering to God that will help us worship God throughout the day with these lyrics and melodies in our hearts.

I think you'll like it.

Anthem Song Writing Retreat

Here's a video from our Anthem song writing retreat that James P threw together. It's the footage of our "play time"- we actually did some work. We made good progress on 7 songs (that makes 10 total) for an album we're planning to record this spring. The track you'll hear is one we worked on this weekend- "Good Life" by Ryan and Clint. It's one of my faves.
